Staffordshire University approached us with an exciting and unique project. Philip Astley was an equestrian, circus owner, inventor and regarded as being the father of modern circus, but unknown to the majority he was also born locally in Newcastle-under-Lyme. The project was to create a brand identity and visual language through which they could raise awareness of this important historical figure. I wanted to create a language that retained the vibrancy, theatre and motion of the circus whilst also being modern, clean and simple.

I created a set of hand drawn line illustrations that could be interwoven through all communication. When placed next to the logo they depict the historically important elements of Astleys’ story; the circus ring (for which Astley is credited as the creator), the equestrian entertainment and the male and female performers.
